Rie Hachiyanagi

Installation Artist, Mt. Holyoke College, MA

The School of Art & Art History has invited installation and performance artist Rie Hachiyanagi as the inaugural participant for LIGHTWELL PROJECTS. Hachiyanagi is an Associate Professor of Art at Mt. Holyoke College whose work incorporates multiple disciplines including traditional papermaking.

Drawing inspiration from Camus, Heidegger, Haiku poets, modern Japanese novelists, and ancient Chinese thinkers, Hachiyanagi explores the interconnections between visual and textual languages.  Her work also philosophically examines auto biographical and social issues, while focusing on experiential visuality.

Lightwell Projects (L/p) is a special gallery program aimed at providing an opportunity to experience substantial contemporary installation artworks by important emerging and established artists from a wide variety of disciplines. L/p’s primary goals include developing intimate community interaction with selected artists, presenting artist lectures to discuss the methods and outcomes of L/P works, and partnering with other Oklahoma art organizations to create a program for writers and critics to facilitate a better understanding of contemporary art. Selected artists agree to work with volunteers to install the artwork and provide personal insights into developing installation art, ideation of the project being exhibited, and the means of executing the work within the Lightwell’s unique architectural properties.
