Earth and Planetary Geochemistry


Fluids, particularly water, play an integral role in the evolution of terrestrial and planetary environments. By examining the geochemistry and mineralogy that results from hydrosphere-lithosphere-atmosphere interactions, Dr. Elwood Madden's  research aims to broaden our understanding of the role of water and other fluids in shaping near-surface environments on Earth, Mars, and other terrestrial planets and address the role of fluids in the geochemical evolution of these complex systems.  Current research projects focus on the geochemistry of near-surface water and weathering products on Earth and Mars, as well as the geology and geochemistry of gas hydrates in ocean sediments, permafrost, and planetary materials.
