Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering

Prospective Graduate Applicant:

The Graduate Application Forms to apply for either the Master or Ph.D. program in the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering may be found at http://gradweb.ou.edu. Additional information about the program may be found at http://www.ou.edu/mewbourneschool.

Requirements:

  • TOEFL: Only a candidate for whom English is not their native language is required to submit an official TOEFL score of at least 213 (computer exam) or 550 (written exam) OR IELTS score of 6.5 or more
  • GRE scores
  • Statement of purpose
  • Three letters of recommendation

Please send GRE scores, statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation directly to the department and NOT to the office of admissions and records. ONLY TOEFL and application material need to be sent to the office of admisions and records.

Only admitted applicants to the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering may submit a resume for graduate assistantship consideration. Please note that all assistantship appointments are made after August 1st for Fall Semester and after December 1st for Spring Semester.

Students may choose between the thesis and non-thesis degree programs.


Thesis Program

Two Required Graduate-Level Courses 6 hr.
Choose from:
  • Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics
  • Fluid Flow in Porous Media
  • Introduction to Rock Mechanics
  • Well Test Analysis

    One Approved Applied Mathematics Course 3 hr.

  • Applied Statistical methods
  • Mathematical Simulation Models

    Thesis Project § 4 hr.
    Total 30 hr.

    Nine of these fifteen hours must be in PGE.

    § The thesis will be defended in a final oral examination. 


    Non-Thesis Program

    Eighteen of these twenty-five hours must be in PGE.

    § The examination may be either oral, written, or both and may be attempted no more than twice. 



    For students with undergraduate degrees in engineering fields other than Chemical, Petroleum or Geological Engineering, an alternate cirriculum may be available. Such a program can be set up for undergraduates who have degrees in science or business. Please consult with the program director for more information.
