Fundamentals of Seismic Rock Properties (3.5 days)

The broad theme of this course is to explore the seismic response of rocks and understand how it relates to petrophysical parameters. This understanding is key to interpretating seismic data in terms of subsurface rocks and fluids. Among the unique aspects of the course is its focus on connecting seismic observations, velocities, amplitude and attenuation to rock physics for the purpose of exploration and exploitation. Upon completion, one should possess a unified glossary, a fundamental appreciation of the important issues in rock physics and how they impact wave propagation and hence seismic interpretation, limitations of seismic attributes and logs.  You will be taught the fundamental skills and exposed to the basic tools to deal with issues like fluid substitution, anisotropy, invasion, lithology discrimination, static-dynamic moduli, net to gross, pore pressure prediction, and hydrocarbon product differentiation.

Topic to be covered are:

1) Concepts of Elasticity
2) Seismic Wave Propagation and AVO
3) Rock Composition and Structure
4) Rock Properties Models
5) Laboratory Measurements
6) In-situ Values and Observations
7) Emerging Technologies
