Why Petroleum Engineering?

Some students choose Petroleum Engineering for the excellent scholarships, opportunity for summer internships, top starting salaries, and high placement rates in the industry.

Many students like the long-term opportunities: oil companies are going to be around for a long time, nationally and internationally.  Some students like to get a little dirty.  Petroleum engineers work outside and in the field, but they also work in management, consulting, investments, research, education, and many other careers.

Check List:

  • High placement rate for graduates during peak and slow trends in the oil and gas industry.
  • The demand for petroleum engineers continues to be greater than the supply.
  • One of the top salaries for OU graduates on campus every year.
  • Top paying summer internships.
  • The University of Oklahoma is consistently ranked in the top four by U.S. News and World Report.
  • Domestic opportunities range form large cities to small towns.
  • International operations: explorations in Asia, Africa, Scotland, Norway, and South America provide unique opportunities for the adventurous engineer.

Scholarships  (click here for undergraduate scholarship applications)
Substantial scholarship support is available to students studying petroleum engineering at the University of Oklahoma.  This is possible through the generous support of alumni, friends and corporate sponsors.  Most of the PGE awards are in addition to general university scholarships.

Top incoming freshmen are eligible for the Mewbourne Leadership Scholarship award.  This is a four-year scholarship that rewards outstanding student leaders.  Students with this scholarship are guaranteed an internship in the oil and gas industry after their freshman year, mentoring by a practicing petroleum engineer, and much more.

You may print one of our scholarships or call the student coordinator at the Mewbourne School of Petroleum & Geological Engineering at (405) 325-6863 or 1-800-522-0772, ext. 6863.
