2006 San Antonio Texas,
Nonverbal Communication Division
3nd Business Meeting
November 16, 2006
Mission Room 103A,
6-7:15pm
Prepared by Susanne Jones, April 22, 2007
Minutes are presented in chronological order as issues were
discussed during the business meeting
- Buck calls
the meeting to order and welcomes the audience.
- Old
business (Manusov):
- 2005
business meeting minutes were approved.
- Manusov
summarized the 2006 panel organization and pointed out that
all panels were thus far well attended.
- Burgoon
advertised once more the 2006 local scholars’ panel and also
pointed out that we are not getting panels placed well in
terms of location/time. Therefore advertising panels is
important to assure audience attendance.
- Manusov
stated that the NVC division was given three panel slots
(including one business meeting slot) for the 2006 NCA
conference. She added that the NVC division will have three
panel slots for the 2007 conference as well.
- A
discussion concerning the 2007 panel organization began (see
also new business). Manusov discussed the benefits of not
accepting competitively-selected panels. She pointed out
that is important that we assure that NVC panels are
cross-listed with other units because that would draw in
members from other units.
- Manusov
discussed outreach strategies: She suggested that it might
be a good idea to encourage members from other divisions to
become NVC officers or to liaison with the NVC division. In
addition, she said that we need to continue efforts to
cross-list NVC panels with other divisions. Cross-listing
panels and liasing with other division members and planners
has not quite worked that well for the 2006 conference.
- Manusov
asked how we can make the NVC division a more vibrant
division and how we can encourage member involvement, even
if these members are not members of the NVC division.
- Manusov
mentioned that she was successful in contacting other
division program planners and in requesting NVC papers from
the planners. She received a large number of papers from 7
to 8 divisions.
- Manusov
outlined the paneling process: The executive committee read
blind papers and subsequently rank ordered the papers in
order to determine the NVC Top Papers. Both Top Papers were
from the Interpersonal Communication Division.
- Burgoon
commented on the problem of cross-listing papers on all
academic. NCA Director Roger Smitter has been informed of
this problem
- Manusov
continued and stated that the 2006 business meeting has been
well attended.
- New
business (Manusov/Burgoon)
- Manusov
summarized information from the 2006 Leg. Assembly meetings:
NCA presented a positive financial report (expenses have
decreased; revenues are increasing). Dues will be increased
by $10.00 for regular nonstudent members. There was also
discussion to increase life membership fees from $3500.00 to
$4500.00 before July 1, 2007. Sustaining membership will
remain the same. Discussions also continued on the
guidelines of judging communication certification standards
across communication departments. Essentially, questions
focus on what communication departments should look like.
- 2007
local scholars’ panel, NCA conference, Chicago, IL:
Burgoon returned discussion to the 2007 NCA conference in
Chicago, IL: She began the discussion by generating ideas
for the local scholars’ panel. NVC members brainstormed
about local scholars who live in driving distance in the
Midwest.
- Miller
questioned whether we can bring in scholars who are not NCA
members. Manusov stated that thus far local scholars’ panels
have received positive feedback. In addition, the local
scholars’ panel highlights the interdisciplinary nature of
nonverbal communication. Bringing in local scholars from
other disciplines is also consonant with the 2007 NCA
conference theme, which is “Communicating wordviews:
Faith—Intellect—Ethics (see
http://www.natcom.org).
- Ideas for
local scholars’ panels
-
Methods: White suggested cosponsoring a methods panel
that could address specifically nonverbal coding
approaches. This methods panel could also address
interpretive approaches to coding nonverbal behavior and
might be designed as a high-density panel with some extended
discussion time after paper presentations. Attendees could
break into groups of five
- New
technologies: Burgoon suggested a new technology panel
that could serve coffee and drinks. Walther added that there
are quite a few technology vendors in the Chicago area who
could contribute to this panel.
-
Human avatars: Buck suggested a human avatars panel.
- Burgoon
encouraged attendees to send her e-mails with further ideas
on panels.
- Number of
panel slots and advertisement: The discussion continued with
questions focusing on increasing the number of NVC’s panel
slots. We will have three panel slots and might get additional
panel slots.
- Manusov
pointed out that the NVC division does not want to compete
with other divisions, but that we could get 1 to 2 more
slots.
- In
addition, we should increase efforts to co-sponsor with
other divisions. It was suggested that NVC members (and
officers) attend division business meetings to advertise for
NVC and to encourage co-sponsorship.
- We
might also consider submitting our panels to other divisions
send out to all members generate ideas.
- Changes to
NVC bylaws: (Manusov)
- Officer
rotation is changed from a one-year rotation to a two-year
rotation (Sect. 7);
-
Specifications about liaisons are to be cut (Sect. 6.16)
- Change
language (Sect. 6.2.4)
- The VC
corresponds with co-sponsors
- We have
nominating and evaluation committees of elective members.
- We may
accept papers and panels.
-
Discussion: A discussion ensued whether that language
change would be acceptable. Questions were raised how
panels have been coming together. In 2005, all panels were
created by the exec. committee. In 2006, Manusov created all
panels by relying on ideas that were generated in the 2005
business meeting. A note was made that our membership is
still fairly small and that we are not accepting competitive
panels for the 2007 NCA conference. A concern was raised
that we need to involve other faculty and graduate students.
A conclusion was reached that we should add provisional
language in the bylaws that allows for the competitive
acceptance of panels and papers.
- Walther
moved the acceptance of bylaws with some minor changes. Buck
seconds.
- We did
not elect a VC-elect because of the change in rotation.
- The gavel
was passed on from Buck to Manusov
- Manusov
handed out the two Top Paper awards
