First Year Trip

Guide Info

Enjoy the outdoors? OU's premier wilderness experience is looking for motivated students to act as guides for the First-Year Trip. Don’t consider yourself outdoorsy? We will teach you everything you need to know. You don't need to have any prior outdoor experience, just a desire to learn. Our priorities are to find people who are excited about working with others while learning and teaching new skills. Our guides bring a wide variety of experiences and backgrounds to the program.

What is the First-Year Trip? The First-Year Trip takes first-year students on a wilderness backpacking adventure before the start of the fall semester. This orientation program gives first-year students the opportunity to build friendships and enjoy the outdoors, while beginning the transition to life as a Sooner. This last summer, we hiked into the Pecos Wilderness near Santa Fe, New Mexico, and will be returning there in 2006.

Want to be a guide? The program is looking for dedicated upperclassmen leaders like you to act as guides for incoming first-year students. During this week of adventure, you will be paired with a small group of participants, instructing them in wilderness living and easing their transition back in Norman. Join us in our efforts to make this trip take shape for another excellent year!

How to become a First-Year Trip Guide: The training program in the spring focuses on leadership development, group interactions, wilderness skills, and safety management. Specifically, the guide training process includes the following:
-CPR Certification,
-Two soft skills workshop,
-A safety management seminar, and
-A hard skills leadership training course.

Cost: The cost for guide training is definitely manageable. CPR training is typically $25. The 5 day guide training trip will run at cost around $100 for food and travel expenses. Any additional cost would include personal gear, listed on the equipment list required for both participants and guides. The trip in August will be free for guides.

Time commitment: Guide training is mandatory. The schedule starts at the beginning of the spring semester and consists primarily of evening meetings that take place every other Wednesday. The two soft skills workshops and the safety management seminar are offered twice during the semester, however only attendance at one of each is required. The process concludes with a 5 day guide trip after finals week.
