The Council of Learned Societies in Education (CLSE) is a national federation of professional associations and societies in the educational foundations, educational studies, and educational policy studies fields devoted to maintaining and strengthening the role of those foundations disciplines in the preparation of educational personnel, in the study and analysis of education, and in policymaking related to education at all levels in the United States.

The American Educational Research Association (AERA), a professional membership organization, strives to improve the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education. AERA offers a comprehensive program of scholarly publications, training, fellowships, and meetings to advance educational research, to disseminate knowledge, and to improve the capacity of the profession to enhance the public good.

> AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL STUDIES ASSOCIATION (AESA)


The American Educational Studies Association (AESA) was established in 1968 as an international learned society for students, teachers, research scholars, and administrators who are interested in the foundations of education. AESA is a society primarily comprised of college and university professors who teach and research in the field of education utilizing one or more of the liberal arts disciplines of philosophy, history, politics, sociology, anthropology, or economics as well as comparative/international studies. As with all members of academe, keeping current with research publications in one's discipline is on ongoing responsibility of critical importance to the members of AESA.

The role of AESA is to provide a cross-disciplinary forum wherein scholars might gather to exchange and debate ideas generated from the above mentioned areas. This cross-disciplinary commitment of the organization creates a landscape for the discussion of broader policy issues such as minority studies, gender studies, multicultural education, democracy, and issues of educational equality and equity. Our membership is dedicated to examining issues in education from a plurality of academic viewpoints and perspectives.

> AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN (AAUW)

Mission Statement - AAUW promotes education and equity for all women and girls, lifelong education, and positive societal change. The Association—with more than 100,000 members, 1,300 branches, and 550 college/university institution partners nationwide—advocates education and equity. Since its founding in 1881, members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day—educational, social, economic, and political. Our commitment to our mission is reflected in all aspects of our work. The Association's voice has long influenced legislative debate on critical social issues such as education, sex discrimination, civil rights, reproductive choice, affirmative action, Title IX, welfare reform, vocational education, pay equity, family and medical leave, and health care reform.



> ASSOCIATION OF MORAL EDUCATION (AME)

Mission Statement - The Association for Moral Education (AME) was founded in 1976 to provide an interdisciplinary forum for professionals interested in the moral dimensions of educational theory and practice. The Association is dedicated to fostering communication, cooperation, training, curriculum development, and research that links moral theory with educational practice. It supports self-reflective educational practices that value the worth and dignity of each individual as a moral agent in a pluralistic society.

The Association emphasizes the development of moral understanding in all individuals, and believes that such development requires opportunities for engagement in moral dialogue. Through its program of conferences and publications, the AME serves as a resource to educators, practitioners, students, and the public in matters related to moral education and development, provides expertise on educational policies and practices, and provides information about moral education to interested parties in the general public.

The AME is governed by an Executive Board elected by and drawn from its membership, and the active participation of all of the members of the Association is encouraged. Members include public and private school teachers and administrators, counselors and psychologists, philosophers, sociologists, researchers, teacher educators, religious educators, and graduate students interested in advancing the study of moral education. The AME invites all professionals interested in moral education to be members.

Objectives - To provide a forum for professionals who represent a wide variety of positions in moral education; to foster communication, cooperation, training, and research in moral education, and to serve as a resource in matters related to moral education.

> HISTORY OF EDUCATION SOCIETY (HES)

The History of Education Society is an international scholarly society. Its purposes are to:

- Promote and improve the teaching of the history of education in colleges and universities
- Encourage scholarly research in the history of education, and facilitate the publication and dissemination of the results of that research Interest the educational profession and the public at large in the value of historical perspective in the making of educational policy
- Promote library and museum facilities for the preservation of source materials in the history of education
- Cooperate with specialists in other disciplines to interpret educational developments in a broad historical context
- Encourage cooperation among specialists in the history of education throughout the world in joint studies and the exchange of documents, and
- Cooperate wherever possible with organizations of professional historians and professional educators throughout the world.

> INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF EDUCATIONAL BIOGRAPHY (ISEB)

The International Society of Educational Biography, ISEB, is a professional academic association that encourages a variety of approaches to biographical study for the purpose of education. Very specifically the purpose of ISEB is to:

- Promote the scholarly study of lives of educators and their contributions to pedagogical thought and practice. Analytical and interpretive approaches of all kinds are sought;
- Encourage the exchange of ideas between scholars of education and those from other disciplines who have an interest in the field of education through their common bond of educational biography; and
- Promote the improvement of teaching in education by adding a biographical dimension to the study of pedagogy.

> THE JOHN DEWEY SOCIETY (JDS)

Founded in 1935, the John Dewey Society exists to keep alive John Dewey's commitment to the use of critical and reflective intelligence in the search for solutions to crucial problems in education and culture. We subscribe to no doctrine, but in the spirit of Dewey, we welcome controversy, respect dissent, and encourage the responsible discussions of issues of special concern to educators. We also promote open-minded, critical reconsiderations of Dewey's influential ideas about democracy, education, and philosophy.

> NATIONAL WOMEN’S STUDIES ASSOCIATION (NWSA)


Vision Statement - NWSA has a vision of a world in which all persons can develop to their fullest potential and be free from all the ideologies and structures that consciously and unconsciously oppress and exploit some for the advantage of others.

To this end, this organization is committed to support and promote feminist teaching, research, and professional and community service at the pre-K through post-secondary levels. Integral to this commitment is understanding the political ramifications in our teaching, research and service.

NWSA is committed to the development of scholarship and research that incorporates disciplinary, interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, multicultural, and/or global methods and perspectives to advance the study and knowledge of all women and to create critical dialogue on the production of knowledge about and related to all women and on the application of such knowledge to social and political practices and processes. To that end, we recognize the integral connection among scholarship, activism, and teaching.

NWSA is committed to the creation and growth of women's studies institutional units dedicated to teaching, research, scholarship, and community activism, and especially committed to the efforts of programs and departments to realize the research and scholarship missions of NWSA. In order to meet these goals, NWSA is also committed to a vision of academic work that includes the participation of faculty, students, and community scholars; the exchange of regional scholars; and the presence of community organizations, both locally and globally, engaged in critical reflection and dialogue on the social meaning and use of research, scholarship, and teaching in women's studies more broadly conceived.



> OKLAHOMA EDUCATION ASSOCIATION (OEA)

Mission Statement - The Oklahoma Education Association shall promote the cause of quality public education, advocate equal educational opportunities and human and civil rights for all, advance the profession and expand the individual and collective rights and further the interests of educational employees in Oklahoma.
Strategic Objectives:
- To secure commitment to the intrinsic value of public education, promote public education as a basic right and increase Oklahoma's financial investment in public schools.
- To achieve OEA's vision of quality education by leading the movement to improve public education and restructure Oklahoma's public schools.
- To work independently and with other groups to eliminate all forms of discrimination and achieve equitable treatment for all Oklahomans.

Mission - To support graduate students in the study of Foundations of Education, which derives its character and methods from a number of academic disciplines, combinations of disciplines, and area studies, including: history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, religion, political science, economics, psychology, cultural studies, gender studies, and educational policy studies. The purpose of Foundations Studies is to bring these disciplinary resources to bear in developing interpretive, normative, and critical perspectives on education, both inside and outside of schools.


 

> PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION SOCIETY (PES)

Objectives -
- Promote the fundamental philosophic treatment of the problems of education;
- Promote the clarification of agreements and differences among the several philosophies of education through the opportunities for discussion afforded by annual meetings;
- Advance and improve teaching in the philosophy of education both in schools for the education of teachers and in other educational institutions;
- Cultivate fruitful relationships between workers in general philosophy and workers in philosophy of education;
- Cultivate fruitful relationships between scholars in philosophy of education and those in other areas of education, and
- Encourage promising students in the field of philosophy of education.

> SOCIETY OF PHILOSOPHY AND HISTORY OF EDUCATION (SOPHE)

Formerly known as the Southwestern Philosophy of Education Society, SOPHE encourages scholarship in the philosophy and history of education as well as educational biography and issues in education. The Journal of Philosophy and History of Education (JOPHE) publishes papers selected from those presented at SOPHE meetings, which occur annually in the fall.

The Educational Foundations Society, a special interest group within SOPHE, meets before the annual meeting to discuss the current landscape of the foundations of education. The society also sponsors the Bill Drake Lecture, which is featured as part of the annual meeting.

Since 1984, Feminist Teacher has been at the forefront of discussions about how to fight sexism, racism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression in our classrooms and in the institutions in which we work. A peer-reviewed journal, Feminist Teacher provides a forum for interrogations of cultural assumptions and discussions of such topics as multiculturalism, interdisciplinary, and distance education within a feminist context. Feminist Teacher serves as a medium in which educators can describe strategies that have worked in their classrooms, institutions, or non-traditional settings; theorize about successes or failures; discuss the current place of feminist pedagogies and teachers in classrooms and institutions; and reveal the rich variety of feminist pedagogical approaches. Education and Culture, published twice yearly by Purdue University Press, takes an integrated view of philosophical, historical, and sociological issues in education. Submissions of Dewey scholarship, as well as work inspired by Dewey's many interests, are welcome. JDS members receive the journal as part of their membership in the society.

The journal publishes critical essays, research studies, essay and book reviews, and “rejoinder” essays. Recommended lengths vary for critical essays, research studies, or essay reviews (7500 words); book reviews (1000-2000 words); and commentaries or rejoinders to published pieces (800 words). Alternative or imaginative submissions, such as poetry, creative nonfiction, and narrative, will be considered; please consult the editor prior to submission.

Twenty-five years after its founding, Signs has established its academic credentials. Its peer-review process is rigorous, its essays often groundbreaking, its reputation prestigious. We think it is time now to take more risks, to provoke more debate, to prize the lively, to experiment occasionally with innovative forms, to sharpen the scholarly edges of discussion. We look forward to publishing articles in various voices—articles engaging gender, race, culture, class, nation, and/or sexuality either as central focuses or as constitutive analytics.

NWSA Journal

NWSA Journal, an official publication of the National Women's Studies Association, publishes the most up-to-date interdisciplinary, multicultural feminist scholarship linking feminist theory with teaching and activism. In addition to essays focusing on feminist scholarship and reviews of books, teaching materials and films, the journal regularly includes such features as Reports and Observations, and Women Recollected. It is published three times a year by Indiana University Press.
