| Larissa Bonfante
is Professor of Classics at New York University. She received her
Ph.D. from Columbia University and has excavated in Italy with Massimo
Pallottino. Professor Bonfante has conducted research on the Etruscans
at the American Academy in Rome. She is a Foreign Member of the Instituto
di Studi Etruschi, the German Archaeological Institute, and is on
the Editorial Board of Etruscan Studies. She has published many articles
and several books, including Etruscan Life and Afterlife, (coedited

This class will survey
the geography, chronology, mystery and the origins of the Etruscans.
We will explore what we can learn about Etruscan history and society
from art and archaeology and about Etruscan influence in Rome.
We will investigate whether the Etruscans were a classical civilization;
how they were different from their contemporaries, the Phoenicians,
Greeks, and Romans; and why?
