An Alternative View of Oklahoma History

October 17-21, 2007
at the University of Central Oklahoma

Alternative Oklahoma is an Oklahoma history course--with a difference. The emphasis is on women, minorities, radicals, and common people. It might also be said that topics are emphasized which have traditionally not made it to the textbooks--topics such as reproductive choice, gay rights, the move to stop nuclear power in Oklahoma, and Oklahoma's chapter of Vietnam Veterans Against the War. But sometimes also standard topics are looked at--in a new way; examples include "The Difficulty of Celebrating an Invasion," presenting an American Indian perspective on Oklahoma's much-celebrated land run. As the state marks its Centennial, such "alternative" approaches seem interesting, even needed.
