Positive Psychology and the Pursuit of Happiness

Wednesday-Sunday March 31-April 4, 2004
Thurman J. White Forum Conference Center (OCCE)
University of Oklahoma, Norman Campus
This class will focus on the emerging field of positive psychology, which is the scientific study of optimal human functioning. It represents a commitment on the part of research psychologists to focus attention on the sources of psychological wellness and on what makes a life worth living. The seminar will explore such questions as: What are the methods of positive psychology? What are positive emotions and do they have evolutionary benefits? What is happiness and how is it measured? Is happiness a good thing, or does it simply feel good? Why are some people happier than others? Is it possible to sustainably increase personal happiness? What are the human strengths and virtues and can they be measured? How does one nurture such strengths as optimism, awe, gratitude, generosity, and forgiveness? This class has been approved for “Social Science” gen ed credit by the OU Gen Ed committee.
