What is the HSK?

The HSK is the Chinese equivalent of the TOEFL.  HSK is a Chinese acronym for “Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi”, which means “Chinese Level Exam”.  HSK levels are 1-6: 1-3 Beginner; 4 Basic; 5 Intermediate; 6 Advanced.

Why take the HSK?

  • Certify that you have the required Chinese proficiency to enter a Chinese college or university as an undergraduate or graduate student*
  • Certify that you are exempt from taking Chinese language course, depending on level of certification
  • Show employers your Chinese proficiency level

*An HSK certificate is valid permanently. However, an international applicant to a Chinese university must provide an HSK certificate granted within two years.

HSK Scholarship:

The HSK Scholarship provides outstanding test takers the opportunity to study Chinese language and culture for one month at a Chinese university.  Scholarship recipients receive free tuition, accommodations, textbooks, and a living allowance.  OUCI notifies those eligible for the scholarship.
