Chinese Culture Experience Center Grand Opening Coincides with The Big Read
The University of Oklahoma Confucius Institute set the Grand Opening for the Chinese Culture Experience Center at the Norman Public Library for Sunday, April 1, 3 -5 p.m. The family event is open to the public and will feature Chinese folk dances, traditional music and instruments, demonstrations of a Chinese tea ceremony, Tai Chi, calligraphy, traditional Chinese games, and a children’s craft all presented by university students and OU Confucius Institute associates.
The afternoon’s activities mark the beginning of a partnership between the Norman Public Library and the OU Confucius Institute through which the Chinese Culture Experience Center will remain at the library for the community to access. The center will also offer free Chinese language classes at the library throughout the year.
“We are very excited to bring China and Chinese culture to life in the backyard of Norman’s residents,” says Sharon Gou, director of the OU Confucius Institute who will also be present at the opening.
Dr. Paul B. Bell, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the OUCI and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Vice Provost for Instruction at the University of Oklahoma will address attendees at 3 p.m. Sunday followed by Anne Masters, Director of Pioneer Library System. The event will feature an interactive touch screen station in the library’s gallery room showing various aspects of Chinese culture, including ancient technology, calligraphy, food, philosophers, martial arts, Chinese scenery and Peking opera. In addition to this high-tech interactive station, there will be displays of Chinese cultural objects in the gallery.
The opening of the Chinese Cultural Experience Center coincides with the beginning of the PLS Big Read: The Joy Luck Club which will run through the month of April. The reading promotion will culminate with a visit from the author of The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan.
The OU Confucius Institute was established in 2006 as a partnership between Beijing Normal University and the University of Oklahoma to support Oklahoma educators in their efforts to teach the Chinese language, and to assist those Oklahoma businesses that wish to do business in the Chinese speaking world.
The Pioneer Library System has 10 hometown libraries, a virtual library, and eight information stations in Cleveland, McClain and Pottawatomie counties serving more than 350,000 residents. The Norman Public Library serves 38 percent of the library systems card holders.
