The Sooners became the first collegiate club team to ever win the Oklahoma Men's State Amateur Tournament with a 2-1 victory on Sunday against Los Lobos from Tulsa. The tournament, held April 1-2, 2006 at the Southlakes Soccer Complex in Oklahoma City brought together the top 6 men's amateur teams from across Oklahoma. In the first match on Saturday, OU defeated Dynamo from Ponca City by a convincing scoreline of 5-0. Midfielder, Nic Wilson, paced the Sooners with two goals. An afternoon forfeit victory over the late-arriving Los Lobos guaranteed OU the first place spot atop Group B. Sunday morning was host to the OU vs. Oklahoma State Bedlam match. The stakes were heightened, as the match counted as the OCCSL match between the two teams as well. After attacking into the wind the first half and defending solidly, OU went into halftime knotted at 0-0. However, 10 minutes into the second half OSU capitalized on a free kick from 40 yards out. The Cowboys served in a ball to their charging forward, when OU's goalkeeper Beau Porter could not handle the ball, OSU cleaned up the rebound by slotting it home from close range. However, OU would fight back with 20 minutes to play when forward Shane Volk converted a nice pass from Jared Russell. With the momentum on the Sooners' side, they pushed forward for the winning goal. After winning a corner kick with 10 minutes to play, Taha Usmani hit in a corner kick that passed across the box to Nick Lange, who calmly rifled a shot to the back post. The celebration was on as OU killed off the final minutes of the match and advanced with a sweet victory over its bitter rival. The championship match pitted OU against Los Lobos, the defending state champions, a very talented squad from Tulsa. Early in the match the Sooners dictated play with many dangerous forays into the attack. OU was finally rewarded with a goal 30 minutes into the half, the hero once again was Lange who slotted home a nice ball from Usmani. The match went into halftime 1-0. The second half saw Los Lobos begin to dictate play. Porter saved the Sooners on numerous occasions as he thwarted many attackers that got behind the defense. OU struggled to keep possession and it was only a matter of time until Los Lobos equalized. They managed to get an open look from 12 yards out that they shot low to the near post under the outstretched arms of Porter. With the Sooners appearing fatigued, they weathered the attacks of Los Lobos and began to regain possession and put together some attacks of their own. With 10 minutes to go in the match, forwards Sam Suflita and Volk combined together to slip Volk one-vs-one against the keeper. Volk calmly finished past the Los Lobos keeper, as he was tentative to come off of his line. The Sooners defended well and celebrated as the final whistle was sounded. The championship now qualifies the Sooners for the Region III Men's Amateur Tournament in Baton Rouge, LA, to be held over Memorial Day weekend.
