Spider wasps may be seen flying low along the grass or vegitation in search of spiders, which they attack, sting, paralyze, and carry to a soil burrow to deposit with their eggs. They may also be seen running across the ground - some species are fast runners - in search of prey. They are usually shiny blue or black, sometimes with orange or yellow markings on their legs and antennae. They are non-aggressive to humans (and generally ambivalent, if they're aware of us at all - unless, of course, you're wearing a giant spider costume) and they are not a stinging hazard, unless you step on one, barefoot, while they are hunting in the grass. Follow the General First Aid instructions on the Perilous Partners page for bites/stings. ![]() |
