News Release

The Political Communication Center and Julian P. Kanter Political Commercial Archive at the University of Oklahoma aims to assist researchers through its Visiting Political Communication Scholars Program. This program provides financial support for on-campus work in the Julian P. Kanter Political Commercial Archive and is sponsored by Mary Louise Symcox. Scholars with various academic backgrounds and research interests are invited to apply for these grants, which will more easily allow them to use the archival holdings.

The Visiting Political Communication Scholars Program serves academics who are interested in study of candidate television advertising.  Graduate students involved in research for publication and/or theses or dissertations are invited to submit applications, and interested undergraduates and lay researchers are also eligible. The Program strives to open the archival holdings to as wide an audience as possible. No serious scholar will be excluded from consideration.

Research grants will be limited in amounts ranging up to $1000.00.  Each proposal should be aimed at a discrete end product. Journal articles and books will receive primary emphasis for funding. Theses and dissertations will constitute a second priority group.  In return for accepting support, each grantee is required to include appropriate acknowledgment in any work produced with the assistance of this support. Second, a copy of each resulting published work must be forwarded in a timely fashion to the Center.

Research funds will ordinarily be provided to defray travel expenses. Other expenses incident to the use of the archives, however, may be considered. Funds may not be used for the employment of local researchers for preliminary or post-visit work. Visiting scholars will be reimbursed for expenses based upon receipts supplied after the research visit.

APPLICATION PROCESS

The following documents should be forwarded to the Center:

  1. A description of the research proposal in one thousand words or less
  2. A personal CV
  3. An explanation of how the Center's resources will be of assistance in the research
  4. A budget proposal
  5. A letter of reference from an established scholar in the discipline attesting to the significance of the research.
