Operation of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) / Drones on Campus
The University of Oklahoma is committed to providing a safe place for the University community to work, live, and learn. OU's Office of Risk Management has the final approval for UAS operations on campus.
Whether for research, photography, or recreation, drones (also known as unmanned aircraft systems/UAS) are more popular than ever. Before flying a drone around the University of Oklahoma campus, there are a few things you should keep in mind:
Due to regulations from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the operation of unmanned aircraft systems (drones) on the OU campus is prohibited except in very limited circumstances.
Research: Students, faculty and staff may apply for authorization to operate UAS for research purposes through the Office of the Vice President for Research. Please consult their policy guidelines at https://vpr-norman.ou.edu/policies/coa.
University Job Duties/Educational Activities: Students, faculty and staff wishing to operate UAS in conjunction with University-related job duties or educational activities should submit an application to the UAS Review Committee a minimum of 7 days prior to the scheduled flight.
The University established the UAS Review Committee to review applications for proposed UAS operations over campus that further the University’s mission, and, if appropriate, approve the proposed operation. The UAS Review committee is also tasked with establishing and periodically reviewing UAS operations guidelines designed to reduce safety risks to people and property on campus.
Please review important information from the UAS Review Committee, OUPD, and FAA:
