Featured Resource: The Julian P. Kanter
Political Commercial Archive
The Political Commercial Archive was established at the University
of Oklahoma in 1985 and designated the Julian P. Kanter Political
Commercial Archive in 1995, in honor of its founder and first
curator. The archive now contains approximately 70,000 commercials
with audio materials dating back to 1936, and television spots
from as early as 1950. These materials are from candidates
running for offices ranging from the U.S. Presidency to state
and local offices throughout the United States, as well as
political advertising for ballot initiatives and other public
issues. The collection also contains many famous political
speeches and debates. An online catalog of the available materials,
as well as the user information needed for access to the collection
can be found on the
archive’s web site.
