Wayne Thomas joined the University of Oklahoma in 2000. He teaches intermediate accounting and financial accounting to both undergraduate and graduate students. He has received numerous teaching awards at the department, college, university, state and national level, including being named the Outstanding Accounting Educator by the OSCPA and receiving the Cook Prize from the American Accounting Association for undergraduate teaching excellence. He authors the following textbooks:

  • Financial Accounting with David Spiceland and Don Herrmann (McGraw-Hill).
  • Intermediate Accounting with David Spiceland, Mark Nelson, and Jen Winchel (McGraw-Hill)
  • Financial Accounting for Managers with Michael Drake, Jake Thornock, and David Spiceland (McGraw-Hill).

His research interests include accounting information in capital markets, techniques used by managers to manipulate earnings, the importance of financial disclosures, and financial statement analysis. He has published articles in The Accounting Review; Journal of Accounting Research; Journal of Accounting and Economics; Contemporary Accounting Research; Review of Accounting Studies; Accounting, Organizations and Societies; and several other journals. He has served as an editor for The Accounting Review and an associate editor for the Journal of International Accounting Research. He received the Competitive Manuscript Award from the American Accounting Association and was awarded OU’s highest research designation, being named a George Lynn Cross Research Professor.

Wayne has been married to Julee since 1990, and they have four children and two grandchildren. He enjoys tennis, golf, biking, the outdoors, volunteer activities and most of all spending time with his family.
