What is Degree Candidacy?

Degree Candidacy is the process all students seeking a degree from Price College must undergo.  It requires students to complete certain prerequisite courses and maintain minimum GPAs in order to enroll in upper-division courses.

What are the required prerequisite courses?

The following courses must be completed in order to begin upper-division business courses:

All courses in the Basic Business category listed on
Price College’s Curriculum Sheets
ENGL 1113, ENGL/EXPO 1213, COMM 1113/2613
MATH 2123

What are the Minimum GPAs?

Students must have at least a 2.50 OU and Combined Retention GPA

and
At least a 2.75 Cumulative (all attempts) GPA with grades of ‘C’ or better in five of the Basic Business courses:

ACCT 2113, ECON 1113, ECON 1123, ECON 2843 and MIS 2113

We strongly encourage students to complete these five courses at OU.

What do I have to do to receive Degree Candidacy?

In the semester you are finishing your Basic Business Five courses, you may apply for Degree Candidacy.  To apply, you must complete this online form. An additional link to the form can be found at the bottom of this page. 

Please note that you will only be able to attend upper-division business courses once you have completed ALL the required prerequisite courses listed above.

What if I don't meet these requirements?

Students who do not meet the above requirements are allowed to petition for Degree Candidacy, provided they meet the following:

Students must have at least a 2.50 OU and Combined Retention GPA.
and
At least a 2.50 Combined Retention GPA with grades of ‘C’

or better in five of the Basic Business courses:

ACCT 2113, ECON 1113, ECON 1123, ECON 2843 and MIS 2113

To be considered, students must also complete the Degree Candidacy Petition. The petition includes writing an essay of no more than eight hundred words that:

Traces why he/she should be approved for Degree Candidacy in Price College

Identifies the desired major and why they wish to pursue that major

Provides a brief narrative of his/her plans upon obtaining a Price College undergraduate degree. 

The Degree Candidacy Committee in Price College will assess the candidate’s academic qualifications and provide a timely response to the application.

An Important Note to Those Petitioning for Degree Candidacy

The Petitions committee members want to make it clear to those petitioning for degree candidacy that the review and selection criteria for such admission are very rigorous.  We will pay special attention to the following:

1.    All grades, but especially those earned in pre-business courses.

2.    The institution(s) at which you earned those grades.  We will favor those who’ve completed all or most of the pre-business 5 courses at OU.

3.    The thoroughness and thoughtfulness of your essay.
