Distinguished Speakers: ‘Building a new humane economy'

Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Human Society of the United States, and Keith Dane, vice president of the society’s equine protection division, spoke with Price students on March 7 in Dodson Lounge.

Pacelle, who was named the society’s president in 2004 after serving nearly 10 years as its chief lobbyist, reminded students that the society doesn’t just help cats and dogs, but all animals that range from pets to farm animals to wildlife.

“The issues that The Humane Society works on in the U.S. are seen throughout the world. We are a global economy where animals do matter,” he says.

Dane oversees domestic horse welfare programs for the society. His efforts include a nationwide campaign to end the slaughter of America’s horses in the U.S. and throughout the world.

“The program has grown in seven years and raised national awareness,” Dane says. “We are on the verge of ending institutional abuse of horses.”

Price Interim Dean Daniel Pullin provided welcoming remarks. Cynthia Armstrong, Oklahoma state director of The Humane Society, attended the lecture.
