International Business/Economics Double Major Selected for Washington, D.C. Internship

Makenna Arnold

Makenna Arnold, a pre-law international business and economics double major at the Price College of Business, recently was selected for a Fund for American Studies summer internship in international affairs. This highly competitive internship provides a summer experience in Washington, D.C. that is designed to prepare students for future leadership.

Over the course of eight weeks this summer, Arnold will join students from around the world to learn about global economic issues. She will actively participate in think tanks discussing economic policy and how to resolve economic challenges domestically as well as in other countries. Anne Rathbone Bradley, an economic analyst for the Central Intelligence Agency’s Office of Terrorism Analysis, is instructing the International Economic Policy course Arnold will be taking. Located just steps away from the White House and Washington Monument, classes will be held on George Mason University’s Arlington campus.

“I am so honored to have received acceptance into the International Policy Internship program this summer in Washington, D.C.,” Arnold said. “Also, I am humbled to have been selected from such an outstanding pool of applicants. I thank the University of Oklahoma, my international advisor and my mentors for helping steer me into the position I am in. This is going to be an experience of a lifetime and I am super excited to capture every second of it.”

According to the internship website, the Fund for American Studies has sponsored academic internship programs in the nation’s capital for more than 40 years. Its objective is to “provide a real-world professional and academic experience for college students to help prepare them for responsible leadership in the future.”

Dalynda Evans, senior academic counselor and international programs liaison at the Price College of Business, said the competition for the international affairs internship was strong.

“I am so excited for Makenna,” she said. “She was told over 10,000 students applied, and she may be the only student from Oklahoma admitted.”

Arnold, whose long-term goal is to be an international corporate attorney, is a Pell Grant recipient and Oklahoma Promise student who works two jobs and is enrolled in 21 hours at OU this spring. Following her summer internship, Arnold plans to study abroad this fall at the University of Utrecht to study the economics of European integration, corporate finance and international trade.

Originally from Yukon, Arnold previously studied at Redlands Community College.
