Advancia president gives convocation address

OU alumna Renee Porter, president of Advancia Corp. in Oklahoma City, delivered the keynote address at the convocation ceremony for the Price College of Business on Dec. 14 where an estimated 150 undergraduates and 100 graduate students were awarded degrees.

In her keynote, Porter asked the graduates to tweet. One student’s response to the request, in a tweet of course, was “The best graduation is when you’re asked to take & post pics on social media DURING the address! #OUPriceCollege”

Porter told graduates to create opportunities. “Outside of your work endeavors you each have the capacity to do more and to share your expertise throughout your community,” she said.

She recalled when she first entered the workforce and provided advice to the graduates: “As you enter the workforce, remember that everyone has a first day – everyone from the CEO and below. Even the company you work for had a first day. At Advancia, I remind each of our new employees this on their first day. Hopefully it helps to level out first-day jitters.”

Porter earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1990, a master of business administration in 2003 and a master of science in management information systems in 2003.
