Grade Penalty, If Any, Imposed (6)

An instructor has an obligation to impose grade penalties once the charge is upheld. These penalties may include, but are not limited to:
(a) Requiring the student to complete a substitute
assignment or examination. (b) Awarding the student a failing grade on the examination or paper or on those portions of it on which he or she was engaged in academic misconduct. (c) Lowering the student's final
grade in the course or award a failing grade of "F". The
weight of the grade penalty as calculated in the final
grade may exceed the weight of the work in which the
misconduct occurred. Grade sanctions may not be
appealed except under Title 14 of the Student Code, “Academic Appeals.” Academic Misconduct Code §§ 6.1-6.2

Grade penalties are ordinarily left to the discretion of the instructor. The grade penalty is physically assigned by the instructor, who should complete a grade change form to replace the N with a final grade reflecting the penalty. The grade penalty may be assigned whenever guilt has been established and need not be deferred while the disciplinary penalty is being decided.
