The University of Oklahoma Norman Campus WHAT IS AN OMBUDSPERSON? WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE UNIVERSITY OMBUDS OFFICE? The University Ombuds Office facilitates understanding, communication and conflict resolution HOW CAN THE OMBUDS OFFICE BE OF ASSISTANCE? * The Ombuds Office helps resolve problems and conflicts, especially those which are not being adequately addressed through usual channels. * The Ombuds Office provides informal services, operating outside the usual review and/or appeal procedure. * The Ombuds Office is independent and impartial, taking a nonaligned role when hearing a problem or complaint. * The Ombuds Office provides confidential services, revealing a visitors's identity only with that person's permission. AN OMBUDSPERSON CAN HELP YOU BY... Listening carefully to concerns and complaints: Helping analyze the situation; Identifying and explaining relevant university policies, procedures, and problem-solving channels; Helping define options; Looking into a concern, including talking with involved parties, and reviewing pertinent documents Mediating discussions between individuals or groups in a dispute or problem situation; Following up to make sure a concern is resolved; Recommending changes in university policies or procedures.
