About the New OU Bookstore
Beginning Spring 2019, the University of Oklahoma is moving to a new bookstore, Akademos, and ending the relationship with Follett. Akademos is a fully-online vendor. Through a competitive bid process, the university bookstore committee, in consultation with faculty, staff, and student leadership, determined that Akademos would be able to provide lower pricing on textbooks and course materials for students. Students will be able to purchase new and used textbooks and ebooks or take advantage of low-cost rental options and have their materials shipped to them with free shipping options. Akademos also offers a peer-to-peer marketplace, which allows students to buy and sell directly from individuals or third parties and will provide students with more options for selling back their books.
In addition, Akademos will streamline the adoption process for faculty and staff. Their adoption tool will make it easier to adopt course materials for class and alleviate some of the concerns that we frequently encountered in the current format, including available stock. Akademos will also employ a local dedicated account manager for the university who will work with faculty and staff during the adoption and material fulfillment processes and who will be available to answer questions and address issues as they arise.
Akademos will be on campus September 24-26 to offer faculty training and information sessions about the transition prior to the October 10 adoption deadline for Spring 2019. For those who are unable to attend, online videos and guides will be available.
Moving to Akademos is a step forward in ensuring students and faculty have the best experience, availability, and prices. I am grateful for your help in making this a smooth transition.
