The
Religious Studies Major
This degree program teaches our students to understand religion's
diverse expressions. Students learn both about major religion traditions
and the different approaches to understanding. Future journalists,
teachers, lawyers, doctors and business leaders will benefit from
exposure to this curriculum. The program will help all students
to function in the complex environment of the new century. The Religious
Studies Program emphasizes courses in:
- Introduction to Religious Studies
- Religion and Humanities
- Comparative Religion
- Religion and Society
- Religion and history
- Religion and philosophy
- Women in religion
The Religious Studies Program draws courses from more than 30 faculty
members in a dozen departments, such as:
- Islamic Culture
- Byzantine and Medieval Art
- Religion and Global Politics
- Asian Philosophy
- Jewish Mysticism
- Science in a Religious World
- Religion and Violence
- Contemporary American Christianity

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies is awarded through
the College of Arts and Sciences and the University of Oklahoma.
The checksheet, reflecting the requirements of the degree, is available
by following the link below. The degree requires a minimum of 124
credit hours, of which 48 hours must be at the upper division level
(courses numbered at the 3000 or 4000 level). The Religious Studies
major requires 36 hours, of which 21 must be upper division (courses
numbered at the 3000 or 4000 level).
Students in the Religious Studies Program are also eligible to
(and encouraged to) minor in fields both inside and outside the
College of Arts and Sciences. Academic advising in the Religious
Studies Program involves consultation with the advisors in second
majors, degrees, and minors declared by RELS majors to achieve the
maximum academic experience for the student.

The
Religious Studies Minor
A minor may be earned in Religious Studies by completing one
of the introductory courses from the major checksheet (RELS 1113,
ANTH 1823, PHIL 1203, PHIL 2403, RELS 2003, RELS 2403, or RELS
2413) and 15 additional hours approved for use in the major. A
minimum of 9 hours (a minimum of 3 courses) must be at the upper
division level (courses numbered at the 3000 or 4000 level). The
minor may be declared through the College of Arts & Sciences
Academic Services office in Ellison Hall.

Religious
Studies as a Second Degree
Students majoring in a Program outside the College of Arts &
Sciences or additional majors in the College of Arts & Sciences
may complete the requirements of the Religious Studies major,
the College language requirements, and the College General Education
requirements to earn a second degree in Religious Studies alongside
the original degree. For more specific information about this
