Do you have time to complete a second major or a minor or two? Find out by checking with your departmental advisor or the College of Arts & Sciences advisor. Students may have up to 50 elective hours to earn, and those could be put to good use in an organized field of study, especially if you plan to apply to graduate school.

Important Advising Facts

Do you know the three reasons students fail to graduate on time?

  • No intermediate foreign language
  • No Gen-Ed math course
  • Not enough upper division hours, often including no upper division College Humanities requirement

Students who have 90 hours at the end of the Spring or Summer 2006 semester should schedule a degree check in the College of Arts & Sciences - 325-4411 or through iadvise.ou.edu. The degree check will provide you with a detailed list of remaining requirements and can be updated semester by semester.

If you don't have the 90 hours required for a degree check, you may schedule an appointment with a College advisor to mark up a checksheet and verify your status towards graduation.

Do you know reasons RELS students risk not graduating on time?

  • Not enough traditions courses (3 distinct ones-two courses in one tradition won't count twice in the category)
  • Not enough intro courses
  • Too many group III courses in one subgroup - you need 3 distinct groups. If you have an interest in one particular subgroup, use the additional courses for electives in our major or pursue a minor or second major! Make those elective hours count.

Don't delay requirements in favor of fun electives - you could be back an extra semester! The fun electives will still be available when the requirements are done.
