Thursday, February 2 – Symposium: Religion and Democracy in U.S. Politics and Society – Moderator: Prof. Charles Kenney – Panel: Tom Burns,    Dan Gibbens, Rich Tepker, and Stephen Weldon – G/R/A rooms of the Union from 7:00 to 9:00 PM
Monday, February 6 – Professor Paul Vanderwood (emeritus, San Diego State University) will talk as part of the FOCAS Distinguished Lecture series. Professor Vanderwood is an author and noted authority on Mexican history and popular religion.  His talk is entitled, "Juan Soldado and the Process of Folk Canonization: From Murderer to Saint."  The lecture will be in the OCCE Forum (northwest corner of Asp and Timberdale) at 7:00 PM.  A reception will follow. For more information, contact Dr. Terry Rugeley (325-6002, or trugeley@ou.edu).

Monday, February 27Presidential Roundtable Dinner with Dr. Kimball. Topic: "Struggle for the Soul of Islam: What in the World is Going On....and Why?"

Tuesday, February 28 – Lecture: Dr. Charles Kimball, Chair, Religious Studies Department at Wake Forest University on “Hope for the Perilous Journey Ahead: Engaging the Volatile Mix of Religion, Politics and Democracy in Christianity and Islam.” Dr. Kimball is the author of the Renaissance Project text When Religion Becomes Evil – Union Ballroom at 7:00 PM – A reception and book signing will be held in Baird Lounge at 9:00 p.m.

Thursday, March 23 – Symposium: Religion and Democracy in the Democratization of the World – Moderator: Prof. Charles Kenney – Panel: Charles Kenney, Russell Lucas, Allen Hertzke, and Peter Krug – G/R/A rooms of the Union from 7:00 to 9:00 PM

Monday, April 17 Lecture: Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy, President of the Interfaith Alliance will speak on Church/State Separation Issues. Meacham Auditorium at 7:00 PM – Event sponsored by the Student Renaissance Board

Tuesday, April 18“James Baldwin: Down from the Mountaintop.” A solo play written and performed by Calvin Levels. Reynolds Performing Arts Center at 8:00 PM

Friday, April 21 Puterbaugh Conference on the work of Orhan Pamuk

  • 9:00 to 10:30 AM – Discussion Panel in Meacham Auditorium
  • 11:00 AM – Turkish novelist Orhan Pamuk will give a public talk in Meacham Auditorium. Pamuk is the 2006 Puterbaugh Fellow and the author of Snow, The White Castle, Istanbul, and My Name Is Red.
