4-D Turnaround is a Macintosh program which directly converts Bio-Rad Z-series files into quicktime movies. Use anonymous ftp to ftp2.bocklabs.wisc.edu, the files are in the directory /pub/lmb/imr/4D_Viewer/Turnaround.
Todd Brelje's Confocal Assistant program is available from Bio-Rad's anonymous ftp server at ftp.genetics.bio-rad.com, in the directory /public/confocal/cas/. The filename is cas310.zip.
Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis Public Domain Library, Argonne National Laboratory - This site allows anonymous access, connect to www.amc.anl.gov with the username "anonymous" and your e-mail address as a password. Look in the directory /AMC-3/ANLSoftwareLibrary/.

ImageTool - Another freebie, complete with the C++ source. ImageTool is available by anonymous ftp from ftp://maxrad6.uthscsa. It is an image analysis package for Windows 95 and Windows NT and is rather similar to NIH-Image.

MacPhase 2.0 - This is a commercial package, but a demo version is available from the ftp site ftp.servtech.com/pub/users/ottersol, log in as anonymous and send your e-mail address as the password, then read the ReadMeDemo.txt file.

Microbeam Analysis Software Library, University of Michigan - Connect to freebie.engin.umich.edu with the username "anonymous" and your e-mail address as a password. The files are stored in /pub/MSA+MAS/.

MIDAS95 - If you need to deconvolve atomic force microscope (AFM) images to allow for tip size and shape, then this program may be just what you're looking for. Get a copy by anonymous ftp from surfturf.chem.utoronto.ca.
NIH-Image - This public domain image processing and analysis program is available only for the Macintosh. Make an anonymous connection to zippy.nimh.nih.gov, the files are in /pub/nih-image.
There's also a European mirror at ftp.sunet.se, look in the directory /pub/mac/graphics/graphicsutil/nih-image.
An NIH-Image Web page is available with more details, and there's an active mailing list devoted to discussions on using the program.
Osiris - Osiris is imaging software for IBM PC, Macintosh, or Unix. Use an ftp client to connect to expasy.hcuge.ch and check the README file in the /pub/Osiris directory before getting the version you require.
Royal Microscopical Society - A useful ftp site. This is not an anonymous service so I can't give you a direct link to click on. Use any ftp client program to connect to radm.materials.ox.ac.uk and login as rms using the password rms. Here you'll find a mix of software to download, information about the Society, copies of reports and minutes etc. Definitely worth a look.
The Scientific Photography Lab at Basel in Switzerland offers the ftp site foto.chemie.unibas.ch with some imaging utilities in the directory /pub.
SHRLI-SIMPLY for PCs - This software provides for the simulation and display of high resolution electron micrographs. Connect to ftp.univ-lyon.fr and look in the directory /pub/dos/hrtem.
The SPIP program is available by anonymous ftp from a Danish site, dfm.dtu.dk in the subdirectory pub/bin.
VolVis is a volume visualisation program. It's available in versions for a variety of platforms from ftp.cs.sunysb.edu/pub/volvis/. Look in the 'Binaries' directory for the program files.
