Det 675 Welcome to the University of Oklahoma AFROTC

DETACHMENT 675

  • For over 50 years, some of the best and brightest from the University of Oklahoma (OU) have served their country well as pilots, navigators, engineers, doctors, nurses, mathematicians, communications officers, acquisition managers, language specialists, and a host of other occupations. Today, that tradition continues for the cadets at the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Detachment 675 on the Norman campus.
  • In 1998 and 1999, the University of Oklahoma Air Force ROTC unit was awarded the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, placing it in the top 10% of all Air Force ROTC programs in the entire nation. Continuing to build excellence, the Air Force ROTC unit won the prestigious High Flight Award as the top ranked detachment in the entire Southwest Region (top 4 nationally) in both 1999 and 2000! In addition, our cadets win national-level awards every year! Some of these are cash scholarships worth thousands of dollars over and above any Air Force ROTC scholarship they may already have! In the past two years, our cadets won over 17 national or regional-level ROTC awards valued at over $14,500. In addition, they wont 11 local organizational awards valued at $10,500.
  • The Air Force ROTC offers men and women the opportunity to earn a commission as an Air Force officer while they complete their requirements for a bachelor's degree. Interested students may join Air Force ROTC during any semester in their first two years of college without any obligation or commitment. Any student completing the entire program will also earn a minor in Aerospace Studies.
  • The cornerstones of our program are the Air Force Core Values of Integrity, Excellence, and Service Above Self. Within the framework of these values, students will learn about Air Force customs and courtesies, wear of the uniform, Air Force history, quality, management, and leadership techniques. An emphasis on communication skill development permeates the entire program.
  • Because of the complex systems Air Force officers operate and manage everyday, the Air Force needs students with technical degrees. Ultimately, however, the Air Force is looking for quality individuals in any major who aspire to the Air Force Core Values.
  • In addition to the University of Oklahoma, about a fifth of our student cadets attend one of several colleges and universities in the metro Oklahoma City area. These participating crosstown schools include Oklahoma Christian University of Science and Arts and the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond; Oklahoma Baptist University and Saint Gregory's College in Shawnee; Southern Nazarene University in Bethany; Oklahoma City University and Oklahoma City Community College in Oklahoma City; Rose State College in Midwest City, and Webster University and Park College at Tinker AFB.
  • The program itself is divided into two major portions, the General Military Course (GMC) and the Professional Officer Course (POC) plus Field Training which normally occurs in the summer at the end of the sophomore year. The GMC consists of four Air Force ROTC courses and concurrent enrollment in a leadership laboratory. Each course is one semester hour of credit. Normally, one course is taken each semester of the freshman and sophomore years; however, all four courses can be completed during the sophomore year with permission of the Detachment commander.
  • The Professional Office Course consists of two full academic years and the successful completion of four upper division, 3-hour courses. Admission to this part of the program is restricted to full-time students with at least junior standing. Entry into the POC is competitive and requires the student to be fully qualified for an Air Force commission, nominated by the Professor of Aerospace Studies, and selected by a board of Air Force officers at Headquarters, Air Force ROTC.
  • A two-year Air Force ROTC program, consisting of an extended Field Training and the POC portion, is available for eligible students. Interested students should apply for this program normally before the Spring semester of their sophomore year. The program is also open to graduate and law students.
  • The prestige of being an Air Force officer along with exciting job opportunities and our award winning program are major factors for the heightened interest in Air Force ROTC at the University of Oklahoma.
  • Anyone interested in a challenging and rewarding opportunity to study and work with some of our nations best young men and women should visit the Department of Aerospace Studies at 171 Felgar Street on campus or call (405) 325-3211.
