Biography
Major Steve Sams was born in Greeneville, Tennessee on July 31, 1974. He graduated from high school in Greeneville, Tennessee in 1993. In 1998 he graduated from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery. After attending the Officer Basic Course at Ft. Sill, OK he was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (AALST) where he served as a Company Fire Support Officer, Battery XO, Battalion S-4 and Task Force FSO. Upon completion of the Field Artillery Captains Career Course he was assigned to 3-30th where he was a Basic Fire Support Instructor for the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course. Afterwards, he assumed command of C Battery, 1st Battalion 77th Field Artillery. After command, CPT Sams was assigned to the Iraqi Assistance Group as a Military Advisor to the 1st Brigade 9th Division (Mech), New Iraqi Army Camp Taji, Iraq.
Major Sams’ military education includes the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, the Field Artillery Captains Career Course, Combined Arms Staff and Services School, and the Total Army Instructors Course. He has a Bachelor of Arts in History from East Tennessee State University. His awards and decorations include: the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (2 Awards), the Joint Meritorious Unit Award , the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, the Overseas Service Medal, the Army Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge and the Ranger Tab.
Major Sams is married to the former Jill Dehaven of Lawton, OK and has one child; their son Jacob. They make their home in Midwest City, OK.
