Due to the danger of drowning if suddenly ejected into water while wearing full combat kit, the Army has decided that its Soldiers, especially its officers, must be strong swimmers. To that end, cadets participate in combat water survival training on a yearly basis and must pass a swim test before commissioning, which includes swimming short distances while wearing uniforms and equipment, shedding equipment if pushed into the water, jumping into water from a height while blindfolded, swimming continuously for ten minutes, and treading water for five minutes.
