The Bataan Memorial Death March is an event held annually at the White Sands Missile Range near Las Cruces, New Mexico to commemorate the heroic sacrifice made by the veterans of the Bataan Death March, a Japanese atrocity committed during the Second World War in which thousands of surrendered American servicemen were forced to march nearly one hundred miles in five days while enduring brutal treatment at the hands of their captors. The memorial event is a grueling marathon run through the mountains of New Mexico in which participants must navigate 26.2 miles of desert terrain that varies in elevation by more than one thousand feet. At the end, participants who finish meet with veterans of the actual Bataan Death March.

Each year, the OU Army ROTC sends a team of cadets to participate in the event. During the recent competition, Cadet Jason Pannell finished 31 out of 393 in the individual male military light division, while our team finished 8 out of 20 in the ROTC light division despite having sustained an injured team member at the outset of the event.
