Career Orientation Training for Midshipmen CORTRAMID
Career Orientation Training for Midshipmen is conducted at shore training sites on the East and West Coasts of the U.S. The training is intended to familiarize midshipmen with the missions, tasks, and equipment of the various warfare areas: Surface, Submarine, Aviation, and Marine Corps. This experience also introduces midshipmen to the career development ladder within each warfare area and emphasizes the importance of military courtesy, smartness, and discipline. Midshipmen spend one week with each of the warfare areas.
- Surface Week
- During Surface Week Midshipmen attend firefighting and damage control classes and many other informative sessions. They also begin learning to drive ships using state-of-the-art simulators. The week includes an overnight trip on a surface ship, where the surface fleet's many capabilities are displayed for the midshipmen.
- Submarine Week
- Submarine week is spent guiding Midshipmen through the world of the "Silent Service." Midshipmen learn firefighting, damage control, and navigation. They also spend time in the dive trainer (a simulation of a submarine control station) and the wet trainer (a simulation of submarine flooding damage control). The high point of the week is going aboard a fast attack or fleet ballistic missile submarine for a night. Midshipmen get a taste of life aboard one of the world's premier fighting machines.
- Aviation Week
- During Aviation week Midshipmen learn about the various aircraft the Navy and Marine Corps operate. Every Midshipman who qualifies rides in at least one aircraft. A lucky few are able to co-pilot the F/A-18.
- Marine Week
- Marine week consists of a variety of training exercises to familiarize Midshipmen with the Marine Corps. Midshipmen learn the basics of patrolling, view demonstrations of amphibious landings, and take close looks at Marine Corps equipment and weapons systems.
