Specialty Training
- Nuclear Power Training
- Those midshipmen who are interested in submarines and/or the Nuclear Power Program are encouraged to apply for summer training in nuclear-powered submarines or surface ships. Selected midshipmen will be assigned to nuclear-powered attack submarines, fleet ballistic missile submarines conducting patrols, or nuclear powered aircraft carriers. Submarine training is available to second class and first class male midshipmen on a limited basis. Nuclear powered aircraft carrier cruises are available to both female and male first and second class midshipmen.
- Aviation Training
- Two types of aviation summer training are available to midshipmen interested in naval aviation careers. Candidates must be physically qualified for:
- A Carrier Aviation Training. Available to first class male and female midshipmen, this training is aboard a deployed carrier where you will be assigned to one of the ship's helicopter or fixed wing squadrons, usually involving one or more flights.
- A Patrol Squadron Aviation Training. Available to first class male and female midshipmen who are assigned to a Maritime Patrol (P-3) Squadron. This aviation summer training usually involves plentiful flight time.
- Foreign Exchange (FOREX) Midshipman Training Program
- In order to promote an exchange of professional, cultural, and social experiences between midshipmen in the United States Navy and midshipmen of approximately 25 foreign navies, a Foreign Exchange Midshipmen Training Program is normally conducted each summer. A limited number of exemplary, highly motivated First Class Midshipmen will be ordered to training in a foreign navy in lieu of the normal First Class training period. This is an excellent opportunity to train with a foreign navy if you are fluent in a particular language.
- Academic Year Training
- A limited number of students, under certain circumstances, may be permitted to conduct their first class training during the winter break. These training sessions are generally shorter in length and are available only to midshipmen with bona fide academic requirements preventing them from completing their first class training during the summer between their junior and senior years.
