2009 Conference Paper Prizes

Members with appropriate papers scheduled for the Fall 2009 conference are
encouraged to compete for our two conference paper prizes.
Historical Literary and/or Cultural Studies / $250
Hispanic Gender Studies (Bill L. and Gerre D. Andrist
Prize) / $250 in 2009
Eligible papers: must have been accepted in a session for the current
year; may be nominated by a session chair or by the author; must
represent new, previously
unpresented and unpublished work, must be typed and double-spaced, using
12-pt. type size; must observe a 3,500 word limit (winners agree
to shorten papers for
15-20 minute delivery); may be written in any of the languages featured in
our annual conference; must be received
by September 01 and mailed with 4 copies to SCMLA at the address
below (please do NOT fax papers, international submissions may be sent via
email);
must include a cover sheet with paper title and name of prize being sought
(papers may compete for one prize only); cover sheet must OMIT writer's name
and address.
Winners will be notified by mid-September and will be expected to attend
the SCMLA Business Luncheon at the annual conference where their
names will be announced.

Application Information:
Apply for one grant only; submit application in triplicate; include:
description of project (max. 2 pages); curriculum vitae (max. 3 pages);
description of any other financial support; rationale for doing research
abroad or for using collections of a specified institution, including the
Huntington, the Newberry and the Humanities Research Center.
Graduate Student Grant: submit application in triplicate.
Include: description of project (max. 2 pages); justification for research
expenses, including travel or purchase of microfilm, photocopies, and other
materials; description of any other financial support; vita and letters of
reference from (a) the student's dissertation director, who should assess
the import of the dissertation and its relation to the student's overall
performance and prospects; and (b) another professor, who should address the
quality of the student's overall performance and prospects.
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants for all awards must be current SCMLA members
and must have been members for the previous 2 years. Graduate Student
Grant applicants must have been members for 1 year. SCMLA Executive Committee
members are ineligible; former research award winners must wait 5 years
before
reapplying. |
SCMLA Book Award
Since 1992, the South Central Modern Language Association
has offered an annual award for the best book by a member of the association.
The award
is in the amount of $500.
- Scholarly and critical books and editions
published in 2008 by SCMLA members are eligible for the 2009 prize.
Nominations, including self-nominations,
will be accepted from members or from the publisher of an eligible book.
- Send two
copies of the nominated book by March 27,
2009 to
SCMLA President for 2009, Professor John Morris, Cameron University,
Dept. of English, Foreign Languages and Journalism, 2800 W. Gore Boulevard,
Lawton, OK 73505.
- Nominees
must be members by March 1; nominees
must be current SCMLA members and must have been members for the
previous two years. The successful
candidate for the SCMLA Book Award presented in 2009 will be announced
at the annual conference Business Meeting/Luncheon in Baton Rouge,
Louisiana.
Kirby Award
- The Kirby Award is presented for best article
in the
South Central Review
journal of the SCMLA. Sponsored by SCMLA and Albert
& David Kirby. The award is $200. Winner
will
be selected from
articles published in 2009 issues.
