The Energy Institute of the Americas was chartered in May 1995 by the University of Oklahoma and Simon Bolivar University in Caracas, Venezuela, to address issues raised by the growing economic interdependency of the Americas, including hemispheric energy security, collaborative research agendas and human resource development.

Directed by Edwin G. Corr, former U.S. Ambassador to Peru, Bolivia and El Salvador, the EIA was created through an agreement signed by O.U. President David L. Boren and Freddy Malpica Perez, rector of Simon Bolivar University.  The founding universitates have now been joined by the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro.  The institute is headquartered in Sarkeys Energy Center, a state-of-the-art, 340,000-square-foot energy education and research complex on the O.U. Norman campus.
