The University of Oklahoma boasts the top program in the world dedicated to the investigation of rock mechanics applied to the exploration and production of hydrocarbon energy. Directed by Dr. Younane Abousleiman, the institute has a staff of prominent applied mathematicians, geologists, geophysicists, and petroleum, civil and mechanical engineers who oversee research funded by a consortium of more than 20 U.S. and international companies, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology (OCAST). Research efforts also involve graduate students from all over the world. The Rock Mechanics Institute is designated as a NSF State/Industry/University Cooperative Research Center.
