Contracting for Honors credit

Contracting for Honors credit involves an agreement among the honors student, an OU course instructor, and the Honors Dean for the student to complete extra work in a regular OU course and receive honors credit. Contracting is discouraged in all but exceptional circumstances because Honors students who contract are missing the classroom context of Honors curriculum. With the prior approval of the Honors Dean, an honors student may “contract for honors credit” in no more than one three-credit hour regular OU course. This form must be completed and submitted to the Honors College office by the final day to register or add a class in any given semester.

Honors students must complete the contracted course with a grade of “B” or better and satisfactorily complete the additional assignment agreed upon. Students receiving an “I” in a class that they have contracted will not receive honors credit; students should never contract for additional work during a semester if they foresee any difficulty completing the regular course requirements and the contractual assignment in a timely fashion. Also, students receiving an “A” or a “B” in a contracted course who have not completed the additional contractual assignment by the time grades are reported for that course will not receive honors credit for that course. Instructors must inform the Honors College office of the status of the contracted work at the same time they report grades for the course. A form will be mailed to the instructor for this purpose near the end of the semester.
