Your status at OU is determined by the number of credit hours you have completed at the end of your current semester.
Freshmen status= 0-29 hours
Sophomore status= 30-59 hours
Junior status= 60-89 hours
Senior status= 90 hours plus
Course numbers have meaning. Courses with a zero (0) in front are remedial courses and do not count toward a degree.
Course numbers beginning with 1000 are considered freshman level and course numbers beginning with 2000 are considered sophomore level. These courses are called lower division level courses. A freshman may take 1000 and 2000 level courses.
Course numbers beginning with 3000 are considered junior level and course numbers beginning with 4000 are considered senior level. These courses are called upper division level courses. A junior may take 3000 and 4000 level courses.
Course numbers beginning with 5000 and 6000 are considered graduate level courses. Undergraduates may only take these courses by written special permission.
The last digit in the course number indicates the number of credit hours the course is worth. If the last digit is a zero, the course hours may vary from one semester to another or the course may be offered for variable hours, depending on student needs. For example, IAS 1003 is considered a lower division freshman level course and counts for 3 credit hours.
Most OU courses are 3 credit hours. Since each credit hour = 50 minutes of class time per week, a course that meets on Monday/Wednesday/Friday (MWF) will meet 50 minutes each class day for a total of 150 minutes each week. A course that meets on Tuesday/Thursday (TR) will meet 75 minutes each class day for at total of 150 minutes each week. Lab courses are figured differently. For each hour of a lab credit a student receives, the student must double the minutes of class time.
