Your OU email address is my official method of communication with you. Make sure you check your emails to learn more about advising news and updates

All IAS majors need to be advised before enrolling in courses. It is important that your advisor approves your course work for each semester. On this page you will find links and other information that pertains to advising for our undergraduate program in International and Area Studies. Please click on the different links below for more information.

Reasons to schedule an appointment with your advisor:

  • To make sure that you are on track for graduation and fulfilling all of the major requirements
  • To get help choosing classes for future semesters
  • To discuss academics or difficulties with campus life
  • To get updated on any new program policies or requirements
  • To discuss options for minors or dual degrees

It’s important to meet with your advisor before you go abroad to study. You need to know what types of courses and requirements you should look at completely abroad.

How often should I meet with an advisor?

You should meet with your advisor at least once a semester to make sure that you are on track for graduation. An email goes out to IAS majors at the end of September about spring advising and at the end of February for summer and fall advising.  We also like to touch base with you to make sure you are happy with your progress and to assess your satisfaction with your experiences so far. Many of our IAS students meet with an advisor several times during the semester. It's important to us to keep your advising file as up to date as possible. If you make several changes to your schedule and if you are not sure where certain classes belong on the IAS degree sheet, please contact our office.
