1 to 6 hours. Prerequisite: permission of instructor and junior standing. May be repeated once with change of content. Independent study may be arranged to study a subject not available through regular course offerings. (F, Sp, Su)
Independent Study may be arranged to let students study a subject not available through regular course offerings. Subject matter for Independent Study courses should not duplicate existing courses. Students need to fill out the Independent Study form (available in the IAS advising office, Hester Hall, room 155).
Students must contact professors directly to discuss the course objective or brief outline of the course (whichever is more suitable) as well as the bibliography. The form needs to be signed by both the student and the professor. After the form has been filled out, please stop by the IAS advising office for review. The Director of the School of International and Area Studies needs to sign the form before enrollment can be finalized. All IAS 3990 sections require electronic special permissions.
One copy of the form is for the College office, one is for the student, and the third copy is for the instructor or departmental office.
The degree sheet indicates that a maximum of 12 total hours may be counted toward graduation in Independent Study. This rule refers to all the courses that are numbered 3990 and 4990 regardless of what the department code is. The statement of maximum credit 6 hours would limit the students in IAS 3990. Students could take it once for 6 hours or twice for 3 hours. Please note that this rule excludes Honors Reading and Honors Research courses, numbered 3960 and 3980.
