School of International and Area Studies
I would like to share some information with you about our new minors in SIAS. Most of you are already familiar with the fact that we have offered minors in East Asian, European, Latin American, Russian & East European, Middle Eastern, and African Studies for the past several years. One big change is the addition of a minor in International Studies; this is an exciting addition to our curriculum.

In order to make the minors more attractive to IAS students and to students in other colleges and other professional degrees, several changes to the IAS minors were proposed and approved in 2007.

The new minors require 15 credit-hours with at least 9 hours at the upper-division level. Courses will be required in three different areas: Language, Social Sciences, and Arts & Humanities. We now require that students take one language course at the third semester level (2113 or above). Please review the check sheets for appropriate classes to take under each category; there are more course options for the new minors so sticking with the different requirements will be easier now, and necessary. The check sheets for our minors are currently available at http://www.ou.edu/sias/home/left_navigation/degrees/minors.html.

Please note that each minor also got its own minor code, which match the corresponding IAS major codes:

Asian Area Studies minor – 0315B
European Area Studies minor – 0315C EU
Latin American Area Studies minor – 0315E
Russian and East European Area Studies minor – 0315C RU
International Studies minor – 0315F
The minors in Middle Eastern Studies (0309A) and African Area Studies (0305A) kept their current codes, just FYI.

IAS students cannot pursue a double major within SIAS; however, many students consider majoring in IAS and minoring in it as well. If you do decide to pursue an IAS minor, it’s important to get advised about this since there are several rules that apply regarding double counting of course work etc.
