School of International and Area Studies
Several students have asked about the option to take a class as Pass/No Pass.

First, please note that this is not the same as taking classes that are S and U graded (satisfactory and unsatisfactory). Students studying abroad will be able to take S and U graded classes, and use them to fulfill major requirements.

College requirements, major, major support and minor classes CANNOT be taken as Pass/No Pass. A maximum of 16 semester hours of free elective credit may be attempted under this option. The grades P/NP are considered neutral grades in the computation of GPA, and credit for No Pass will not be earned.

Students may change enrollment in a course by the add/drop procedure to or from Pass/No Pass through the end of the second week of a regular semester (in the Registration office). College approval should be obtained prior to any change.

To prevent discrimination in grading, the student’s choice of P/NP grading will not be made known to the instructor of a course. The grade will be automatically assigned at the end of the semester on the basis of the letter grade submitted by the instructor. The lowest letter grade required to receive a P grade in a course will be C.

Also, note that students may not ask to receive a letter grade at the end of the semester if they originally enrolled for Pass/No Pass credit. It would be too late to make this change at the end of the semester.
