The courses chosen to fulfill the requirement for an upper-division humanities course outside the major must be chosen from the University-wide General Education course list and must meet the following criteria:
- For IAS majors, the course cannot be a course that is specifically listed under the Major Requirements section of the IAS degree sheet. Even if you have other options for completion of the major work and the course would be “extra” hours within the major, if the course is listed in the Major Requirements column, it cannot be used for the upper-division humanities outside of the major.
* NOTE: IAS course lists that are available on the SIAS Advising page include many applicable major classes that are not officially listed on the degree sheet for our majors. If you choose a class for the humanities requirement from this list and it is not listed on the degree sheet, you are allowed to use the class to fulfill the upper-division humanities requirement outside of the major.
- For students who are completing double majors or dual degrees within the College of Arts and Sciences, the upper-division humanities courses outside the major must be outside only one of the two majors.• Courses could be within the major work for one of the majors, provided it is outside the major work for the second major.
• Please note that if you drop one of your majors/degrees this rule no longer applies. Consequently, before you apply this rule, you should be positive you are going to complete the double major/dual degree.
- For students completing dual degrees with one degree within the College of Arts and Sciences and the other degree in another college, the upper-division humanities outside the major must be outside the College of Arts and Sciences major, with no exceptions.
This rule does not apply to dual degrees within the college (see #2).
- The upper-division humanities outside the major courses may be applied to minor work.
