Award Winning Faculty and Students


The School of International and Area Studies has many award winning students and faculty. If you have won an award but are not listed on this page, please send an e-mail to jbraun@ou.edu  with a description of the award that you have received.


2007-2008

Congratulations to David Miller, an International Studies major, who is this year's recipient of the Thomas W. Adams Award. This award includes a plaque and a check in the amount of $750.00. The title of the award winning paper is "The Legality of Israeli Settlements Within the Occupied Territories".

Bryan Cole is this year's recipient of the Percy Buchanan Award. Congratulations! This award was created by Professor Sidney Brown, Emeritus Professor of Japanese History. The award is named in honor of Percy Buchanan, another former OU professor of Asian Studies who inspired many students during his teaching career. This award is awarded annually to the most accomplished student in the School of International and Area Studies, specializing in Asian Studies. The selection is made by the faculty of the Asian Studies program.

Congratulations to Andrea Denhoud!  Andrea DenHoed, letters and international and area studies senior, was named a 2008 American Rhodes Scholar Scholarship recipient, the 27th recipient from OU in the scholarship’s 105-year history.

Congratulations to Professor Joshua Landis who received the OU Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award.
The OU Foundation in Excellence Teaching Award was established in September 2006 with the first awards presented in the Spring of 2007. Nominees for this award should excel in all aspects of their instructional duties including receiving course evaluations from students that place them within the top 15% of their college’s instructors. Instructional faculty who are nominated for this award should inspire their students within the classroom, and mentor and advise students outside the classroom. They should exemplify to their students and to the University community at large the importance of a considered and reflective life of learning and teaching.

Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest undergraduate honors organization in the United States. Phi Beta Kappa celebrates and advocates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Its campus chapters invite for induction the most outstanding arts and sciences students at America’s leading colleges and universities. The Society sponsors activities to advance these studies — the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences — in higher education and in society at large.

2006-2007

Congratulations to William Caldwell, an MAIS student, who is this year's recipient of the Thomas W. Adams Award. This award includes a plaque and a check in the amount of $750.00. The title of the award winning paper was "A Critical Analysis of U.S. Foreign Policy Towards the Hizbullah of Lebanon".

Erin Weeks is this year's recipient of the Percy Buchanan Award. Congratulations! This award was created by Professor Sidney Brown, Emeritus Professor of Japanese History. The award is named in honor of Percy Buchanan, another former OU professor of Asian Studies who inspired many students during his teaching career. Congratulations to David Isaak, an International Studies senior who was awarded the Millie Schäfer Sitzman Scholarship for OU students engaged in international studies. The purpose of this scholarship is to enable students to participate in study abroad. The scholarship is named in honor of Mrs. Sitzman, who served for many years as a missionary in Africa. For the 2006 competition for the Millie Schäfer Sitzman scholarship, preference was given to a student enrolling in the Summer in Senegal program.

Anna Twitchell is this year's recipient of the Percy Buchanan Award. Congratulations! The award is presented on April 27, 2006 at the College of Arts & Sciences campus awards. This award was created by Professor Sidney Brown, Emeritus Professor of Japanese History. The award is named in honor of Percy Buchanan, another former OU professor of Asian Studies who inspired many students during his teaching career. This award is awarded annually to the most accomplished student in the School of International and Area Studies, specializing in Asian Studies. The selection is made by the faculty of the Asian Studies program.

Asian Studies student Nathaniel Kretchum's Undergraduate Research Opportunites Program proposal entitled "History's Legacy? Anti-Japanese Sentiment in the Youth of China" has been selected by the University of Oklahoma Honors Council for funding. The Council has approved a total of $493.00 in expenses. Congratulations on this award!

International Studies student (Anna) Kate Miller was awarded the Herbert A. and Lela Mitchell Berlin scholarship for the 2005-2006 academic year. Kate is graduating in May, 2006. Congratulations!

FACULTY:

Congratulations to Dr. Amy Olberding and Dr. Elena Songster who both received Junior Faculty Summer Fellowship grants from the College of Arts & Sciences Support of Teaching and Research Committee.

Congratulations to Dr. Eric Heinze and Dr. Russell Lucas on receiving Junior Faculty Research Program Grants from the Office of the Vice President for Research.
