Dr. John D. Waghelstein (COL USA Ret.) is Professor Emeritus at the Naval War College in Newport, RI. He has also taught at Brown University, the Army War College, and the Army Command and General Staff College. While on active duty, COL Waghelstein commanded the 7th Special Forces Group and the US Military Group in El Salvador where he was the first commander of the famous 55.

Dr. Max G. Manwaring is Research Professor at the Strategic Studies Institute of the US Army War College where he held the Douglas MacArthur Chair of Strategy. He served as the Deputy Director of the USSOUTHCOM Small Wars Operations Research Directorate as a Colonel on active duty. He is the author and editor of numerous books and monographs on small wars. His current research focuses on “gangs” and insurgency.

Dr. Marc W. D. Tyrrell is a Social Anthropologist who is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Canadian Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies of Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. His current work focuses on culture and military operations, especially with respect to Counterinsurgency. Dr. Tyrrell is co-author with Major Robert Thornton and John Fishel of Security Force Assistance: The Mosul Case Study, in the Small Wars Journal (online) and by the Joint Center for International Security Force Assistance at Fort Leavenworth, KS.

Dr. David Last is Associate Professor of Politics at the Royal Military College of Canada . He has served as Associate Dean and as the Registrar at RMC. He is also a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Canadian army and has served in multiple PKO missions as well as at the highly respected Pearson Peacekeeping Centre. Dr. Last is the author, co-author, and editor of several books and the author of many articles on multiple forms of Small Wars and Peacekeeping.

General (Ret.) Fred F. Woerner is Professor Emeritus of International Relations at Boston University. He is the former Commander-in-Chief of the US Southern Command where he supported US COIN efforts in Latin America. He was also responsible for planning for the reconstruction of Panama in the event of US intervention, a plan executed by his successor. General Woerner developed the successful American support strategy for COIN operations in El Salvador in the famous Woerner Report.
