welcome to sociology at ou
Welcome to the University of Oklahoma, Department of Sociology. We are a vibrant department with 18 full-time faculty members, approximately 30 full-time graduate students, and nearly 700 undergraduate majors. We offer coursework in most areas of sociology but our strengths are in criminology, social stratification, sociology of the family, demography, research methods, and statistics.
Our graduate students regularly present papers at professional meetings and publish papers in academic journals. Most of them go on to establish academic careers at colleges and universities or work as researchers for government or non-profit agencies. Our undergraduate students pursue careers in about every field imaginable (for example, corporate sales for Dell Computer and officer with the Norman Police Department). Many of them go on to graduate school, particularly law school.
The members of the faculty, in addition to their teaching, maintain active research programs and regularly publish books and journal articles. In addition, they regularly occupy leadership roles in the profession of sociology, in the university, and in the community. We take great pride in having rigorous academic programs while simultaneously maintaining a friendly, supportive environment in which personal attention is a given.
