The Need for the Project

The Hispanic population of central Oklahoma is growing rapidly and is increasingly characterized by immigrant families with limited English, minimal education, poverty-level incomes, and marked acculturation issues that isolate them from the larger service system. Un-like states with historically larger Hispanic populations, areas like Oklahoma City lack sufficient bilingual, bicultural human service professionals to meet these needs. The resulting isolation aggravates already significant risks of intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual violence (SV).

The Demonstration Project

This project implements and evaluate multiple interventions aimed at reducing the incidence and severity of IPV/SV among Latinos in central Oklahoma (metropolitan Oklahoma City).

The goal has been to infuse cultural competency into the service system that intervenes in and prevents IPV to build capacity, increase access, and improve the effectiveness of services for Latinos. Short-term objectives include:

  1. Educate, and cultivate buy-in from all sectors of the IPV service system;
  2. Increase public awareness within the Latino community regarding IPV/SV dangers, laws, and resources;
  3. Boost the capacity of community providers to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate interventions; and
  4. Assist Latino families experiencing IPV in overcoming barriers. Interventions include developing, implementing, and evaluating curricula for each audience; participating in and influencing related task forces and coalitions; and providing case management and translation services for Latino families experiencing IPV.

Long-term objectives include training and technical assistance for service providers; training of trainers for Hispanic community leaders; and stimulating replication of successful strategies.
